5 September 2024, China and Singapore – SP Group (SP) announced the deployment of a 240 megawatt-peak (MWp) agrivoltaic project in Huizhou, Guangdong, China. This is SP’s largest solar photovoltaic (PV) project investment in China, integrating clean energy with agriculture.
Located in Huidong County, this is also the largest centralised solar project currently connected to the grid in Guangdong and is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2024. It will occupy about 660 acres of land with a solar installation capacity of 240 megawatt (MW). Through this set-up, 7.5 billion kilowatt-hour (kWh) of green electricity is expected to be generated over the next 25 years, along with the reduction of coal use by 920,000 tonnes and avoidance of 4.46 million tonnes of carbon emissions.
The Huizhou project combines solar PV generation with agriculture use, fostering multifunctional land use and contributing to a win-win scenario – economic development, promoting green energy generation and ecological balance.
"The Greater Bay Area enjoys a high number of peak sun hours but is constrained by limited land resources, leading to intense competition in the area for solar generation. With SP Group’s industry-leading expertise in deploying integrated renewable energy solutions, we are confident this utility-scale solar project in Huizhou will meet the demand for green energy in the Greater Bay Area and contribute to China's progress towards low-carbon agriculture and infrastructure development," said Mr. Michael Zhong, Managing Director, China, SP Group.
SP has explored a wide range of investment and deployment models for its renewable energy projects in China. These include utility-scale solar farms, ground-mounted distributed, rooftop-to-grid, self-consumption, and demand-side energy storage systems, covering regions with high electricity demand for industrial and commercial use, including Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. To date, SP has secured 1.45 Gigawatt of solar projects in China, with its sustainable energy solutions footprint extending across 18 provinces and municipalities, focusing primarily on commercial estates and industrial parks.
