Media Release
Bangkok, 30 October 2023 — SP Group (SP) announced a strategic partnership with Malee Group (Malee), a leading player in Thailand's beverage manufacturing industry, to install 1.0 Megawatt-peak (MWp) rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV). It will be the first Malee-branded factory to tap into solar power to green its energy mix.
SP will design, own, install and operate the solar PV system, comprising approximately 1,600 solar panels, at Malee Group’s factory in Nakhon Pathom. When commissioned in Q1 2024, the solar PV system will generate 1,378 Megawatt-hour (MWh) of clean electricity annually, supplying approximately 15 percent of the factory’s energy requirements while reducing carbon emissions by 700 tons per year.
This collaboration highlights both companies’ commitment to contribute to Thailand's renewable energy goals of achieving six Gigawatt (GW) of solar energy, amounting to 30 per cent of Thailand’s total energy production, by 2036.
“Malee Group is excited to embark on this transformative journey towards sustainable energy in partnership with SP Group,” stated Malee Group Chief Executive Officer Rajdev Narula. “Our company is determined to become the ‘Top F&B Brand of Choice’ by helping people become healthier and happier every day through the power of plant and dairy. We fully commit to optimising energy usage for maximum efficiency, minimising environmental impact, protecting the local environment, and reducing energy costs as much as possible. Embracing solar power at our Nakhon Pathom factory is not only a significant step in reducing our carbon footprint but also a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our core values of excellence and sustainability.”
SP Group Managing Director for Southeast Asia and Australia Brandon Chia said: “We are enabling the manufacturing sector to harness renewable energy sources and other sustainable energy solutions such as district cooling, cooling-as-a-service and smart digital energy management solutions. This will contribute significantly to Thailand’s decarbonisation efforts. We are committed to helping Malee incorporate clean energy and look forward to more opportunities to support its sustainability journey with our comprehensive suite of smart and sustainable energy solutions.”
In addition to Malee, SP has over 35 Megawatt-peak (MWp) of rooftop solar projects in operation and under construction; and secured a pipeline of over 100MWp of projects across Thailand. Key partners include Asia Composite Material, Compact International and SAICO, who have leveraged SP’s strong engineering expertise, regional experience and operational excellence to embark on their green energy transition.
Other sustainable energy solutions that SP is bringing into Thailand include its first district cooling project in Thailand, at Government Complex Centre Zone C, as part of its joint venture with Banpu NEXT. When completed in 2024, the district cooling system will operate a total cooling capacity of up to 14,000 Refrigeration Tons (RT) and enable the facility to save approximately 40 million baht (USD $1.12 million) per year on electricity costs, achieve 20 per cent in energy savings and reduce carbon emissions by up to 3,000 tons annually.
